I, er, started writing this drunk when I got the ep and I passed out after watching. And I've edited this more so that the drunk liveblogging is at least somehow coherent.

Edit: I also drew THIS on Christmas Eve as the Grouse's dream Christmas. I guess I jinxed/nailed it, eh?

The Zeitgeist Arrow Points To . . . SCIENCE! AGAIN! [Dec. 26th, 2009|04:18 pm]

Happy Birthday, Charles Babbage! Sydney Padua, the creator of the marvelous 2-D Goggles comic shares a few links to help us celebrate it:

Darwin's letter about Babbage (that's two celebrations with one stone, remember that it's still The Origin of Species' sesquicentennial year!)

Original drawings and specs for the Difference Engine I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the material; there will be a quiz later.

And more, to be found @sydneypadua, probably, thoughout the day. She gets adorably excited about Lovelace and Babbage.

HAPPY SCIENCE TO YOU!

Rowless. [Dec. 26th, 2009|07:53 pm]

whatho
I've done no rowing since December 23rd and I think by tomorrow morning I might be climbing the walls. Apparently it's addictive. Normally I row every other day but I skipped it yesterday 'cause it was hard to fit it in around pudding and telly and bathtime. And I was all set to row this evening when my father decided he wanted to go to bed at 6.30pm, which isn't ideal 'cause the rowing machine's in his bedroom. I'd have it in my bedroom only I'd have to move the bed out. So I am unrowed, and my legs are complaining. I hope they don't use their pent-up energy for nefarious purposes.

Also I have left my favourite hat at a friend's house, which is what happens when you socialise.

But Christmas has been really pleasant. Lunch went very well - I made little filo parcels with Wensleydale and cranberry for my mother and myself and stuffed mushrooms for the cheese-hating men of the household. Also I did the roast vegetables, which I recycled today into a risotto. Quite a weird risotto in that it had bits of parsnip and apple therein, but it sort of worked. And there was ice that looked like snow and we had a jovial walk and no-one fell over and I have combat socks the heels of which might last more than a month. Grand.

Merry Christmas, anyone who celebrates! And those who don't, omg, Yuletide!

I got VERY lucky in Yuletide this year and got FOUR stories! Two of them I have not seen yet because they're from Madness, but I have a Persuaders story called Geloso which is really cute, and a Nero Wolfe story called Two Turtle Doves which is also awesome! I am totally thrilled that two of my favourite fandoms got cute stories for ME, omg. I was also glad the archive let me read them before refusing to let me see anything else, heh. Poor coding; it's been hard work for the Yuletide section of the internets this year!

Um, otherwise my main news is that we are having a white Christmas! Not in the aryan-supremacy way, thankfully, but in the way where there is SNOW. The very cute four year old I live with is beside himself with joy. With that and the sheer number of presents that kid has managed, it will be incredible if we survive til tomorrow's family-reunion-fest without him exploding.

(Well, okay, I am maybe pretty pleased too. We played outside in the snow! Awesome! I am even more pleased by that than I am by the fact my family teamed up to buy me an iPod nano. Aww.)

In honour of that, here, have some pretty pictures of snow. You can also have a link to my current favourite Christmas message, from @mrsstephenfry (who I still suspect of having levels I am not privvy to, but find endlessly hilarious, mostly for the fact that real-Stephen Fry quotes her, ahahah).

Talking of Stephen, the QI Christmas episode basically IS a drunken office Christmas party, except if your office had Stephen Fry, Bill Bailey, David Tennant, Alan Davies, and Lee Mack in it. I mean... pantomime horse, complete with "it's behind you!" HAHAHAHA WHAT.

the other Christmas telly I have watched is Doctor Who, for which there are spoilers omg )

I hope everyone is having a better day than my poor Aunt, who flew to Blighty from California for Christmas and whose baggage is still somewhere in London when she has to leave again the day after tomorrow. OMG. And now I am going to go and read in bed and then sleep, because I am not back at work til January 4th, and I can, and this is making me SO HAPPY.

I hope everyone's having a lovely day!

Last night at Midnight Mass our preacher told us that on avergae a family would have its first Christmas Day arguement at 9:58am (and that we should come to church so then we wouldn't be able to have it then :-P) It's now *checks time* 20:40 and so far no arguments!

I have beatiful presents (I will do proper thank you's later) and am now wrapped up in a shawl from my parents reading my lovely Yuletide story :D

It's Alex Rider fic, it's Alex Rider fic that isn't teenie or with a Mary Sue :D:D:D

Out Of The Rain (it's also kind of sad, be warned! but I love it very much <3)

And my recepient likes my story so really I'm all over gleeful.

Doctor Who was pretty good too (can't wait for part two)! And then the James May Hornby thing was... well I won't spoil it but it was kind of brave to end the series with that one.

And now I believe people are watching the Gadget Show and then it'll be Poirot (with Gavin & Stacey recording because I'm about three episodes behind :-S)

So yes, enjoy the rest of Christmas people! And remember there are now THOUSANDS of shiny stories for when you want to escape :P

Happy Christmas [Dec. 25th, 2009|10:39 am]

whatho
My brother found me an old copy of Ultimate Soccer Manager on Ebay. Once I've done the cooking (my father normally does this but he gets gradually more drunk throughout the process and things tend to burn and break and stuff, so we're trying it a new way this year) I'm going to spend the rest of the day being Brian Clough.

Also we have ice outside, which I'm counting as a white Christmas.

-Survived Christmas at the folks. It was better than usual this time, because the sister's bf came with her and this meant less arguing and more humour. Which is of the good. And he's a great guy (and so smart and has such good taste that I always wonder why the hell he's dating someone as ditzy as my sister). The guy got a book on dandyism for Christmas, FFS. Sis doesn't even know who the fuck Baudelaire is.

-These guys came with me as moral support. The maternal unit tends to go a bit OTT on home decoration--it's nothing massively tacky, but she certainly tries too hard. (She's the Finnish Hyacinth Bucket, so this pictorial pretty much illustrates how silly and pretend-posh it all gets.)

Here the boys have landed in what looks like an old English village. The Doctor is going "D'AWWW! SNOW!" and the Master is plotting destruction, as usual.

Oh Victoria Wood ♥

I thought she said she wouldn't do the Ballad of Frieda & Barry again but there it was and now Christmas can begin :P

Turkey has been collected, the last of the decorations are up, the Crib Service... happened :P it was lovely and fab and REALLY full, Christmas Eve tea has been consumed (as in tea the drink and tea the meal *G*), I've had a lovely bath with my Christmas Eve bubble bar, Mum read the Night Before Christmas and are stocking are hung lying by the fireplace

*takes a deep breath*

Now I just have to stay awake until it's time to leave for the Midnight Eucharist *g*

May be online afterwards but if not HAPPY CHRISTMAS everyone :D

Eternal God,
who made this most holy night
to shine with the brightness of your one true light:
bring us, who have known the revelation of that light on earth,
to see the radiance of your heavenly glory:
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

ps. ONLY ONE SLEEP TILL CHRISTMAS DAY! Santa's currently in Chad apparently

Christmas Eve eve!

Just been to see the Footsbarn Theatre Company's Christmas Cracker at the Globe ♥

I mean obviously I adore Shakespeare's Globe at the best of times but tonight, in the cold and the wet and the REALLY wet, I sill loved it just as much and giggled stupidly at stupid visual gags (an actual walking shadow!) and oohed and aahed at the awsome tightrope walkers (though I have to say I was rather more being amazed at anyone doing the splits on the tightrope rather than wondering at the "precariousness of the Christmas spirit and life itslef" thank you very much Evening Standard reviewer!)

Oh and the 12 Days of Christmas was awesome but sadly I was giggling too hard at "on the 12th day of Christmas Shakespeare wrote for me waiting for Godot" to hear the next three days!

Now I have a soggy coat and hat (and gloves but those are wet from mulled wine rather than rain *blushes* and ice blocks for feet but I am SO glad I went!

And barring any accidents that's my last theatre for this year!

(I really need to post a couple of backdated reviews before I try summing up the year *g*)

The Habit of Alex Jennings. [Dec. 23rd, 2009|11:13 pm]

whatho
I saw The Habit of Art yesterday, in London and with [info]slemslempike. I properly liked it. It was funny and engaging and reflexive and it had Alex Jennings in it and it was highly watchable in a way that doesn't currently make me want to analyse it, and it had Alex Jennings in it. I'm fairly in love with Alex Jennings but he doesn't love me back. He rarely does screen work and he never seems to perform in places that aren't London, which means I've seen him four times in twelve years (Hamlet, The Relapse, My Fair Lady and The Habit of Art). But I love him all the same. It had Frances De La Tour and Richard Griffiths in it as well. Alan Bennett forgets to write roles for women as a rule, but F de la T was excellent and Richard Griffiths basically stole the show (though I'll always wonder about Michael Gambon's unseen Auden) and he kissed Alex Jennings' hand but they didn't hug and Alex Jennings didn't have enough lines in the first half but they left him onstage throughout anyway so that was fine. Looking at Alex Jennings is as good as freewheeling down a long hill on a bike.

It's Christmas soon. This evening I watched The Bishop's Wife, which is what I always do on December 23rd, and Mother made mince pies. We watch It's a Wonderful Life on the morrow. Cary Grant has never turned up in my house and told me we're going to work together. It's the thing I most regret.

GUBBINS. I just used this awesome word in a sentence and then pretended I knew precisely what it meant before sneaking away to check that I was right and I totally was. Victory!

But mostly GUBBINS. What an bloody marvellous word.

Daves, Johns, Christmas [Dec. 23rd, 2009|09:23 pm]

[mood | awake]

-The Telegraph interview with John has shown up on the paper's website, with one new pic. Yeah, he doesn't look pleased about having to pose with an inflatable Dalek. *g*

-In case some of you haven't seen yesterday's bedtime story yet, have some DAVE AND PENGUINS. *somersaults of squee*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mtx44GWe3Dg

-Oh dear lord, pic of Daaave in Catherine's Christmas special. Yeah, that's so going to date. In some years' time, nobody's going to even remember who it was they were supposed to be taking the piss out of. (What is it with him and Russells this week? Is he going to do a Rusty next?) The look is sexier on Dave, though;).

-In other news, I may actually have already received almost everything I wanted for Christmas (and it wasn't much), so this is of the good. I got a RAM/bandwidth upgrade, some Monty Python DVDs I haven't opened yet and some more Persiafic and illustrations done. Now if the cat and laptop would not die, that'd be great as well. The folks are coming home tonight and told my sister to get them Christmas food while they were away (it's going to be a bitch finding any in the supermarkets this late). I'm going over tomorrow for Christmas dinner and sauna--hooray! Here's hoping everything will go smoothly.

-Now if you'll excuse Mister Master, he is off to the Antarctic in search of Tencuddles. *waddle waddle*
